Marieke Pierik studied medicine and trained as a gastroenterologist at the Gasthuisberg University Medical Centre in Leuven, Belgium. In 2006 she obtained her PhD on genetic markers for predicting outcome and therapy response in chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She was registered as a gastroenterologist in Belgium and the Netherlands in 2008, and is now a gastroenterologist at the Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC+) and associate professor at the NUTRIM School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism at the MUMC+, as well as being Principal Investigator of a biobank project of the population-based IBD cohort in the Netherlands province South Limburg.
Dr Pierik’s main research focus is on patient stratification, integrOmics, epidemiology, and markers (non-invasive, food, and microbiota) for disease course and therapy response in IBD. She has a strong interest in ICT health-care solutions and value-based healthcare; the MUMC+ IBD team, in collaboration with the Netherlands IBD patient organization CCUVN, has developed “MyIBDcoach”, a telemedicine device for all patients with IBD. MyIBDcoach is used in routine care in 14 hospitals in the Netherlands, collaborating in a learning network of healthcare professionals and patients, the aim which is to improve clinical-care pathways trough-data analyses.
A patient-centred multidisciplinary approach and continuity of care are key focus points at the MUMC+ IBD clinic. Together with her colleague Dr Jeoffrey Haans and the nurse specialists Mia Cilissen and Ilse Sour, Dr Pierik is responsible for the treatment of patients with IBD; they work in collaboration with the gastrointestinal surgeons Prof. dr. Stassen, Dr Melenhorst, and Dr Breukink, and the paediatric gastroenterologists Dr Kokke and Drs Bevers. The IBD team’s mission is to improve the quality of care and the outcomes of IBD trough monitoring of patient-reported outcomes and psychosocial and lifestyle confounders of IBD; patient care is organized thematically, with specialized IBD outpatient clinics and endoscopy programmes, including implementation of an eHealth care-path using myIBDcoach. Dr Pierik is a member of the board of the European Crohn´s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) and the Netherlands national IBD organization the Initiative on Crohn and Colitis (ICC).EM-13993 - Date of preparation: November 2019
