Knut Schäkel is Professor of Immunodermatology and Assistant Medical Director at the Department of Dermatology of the Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Germany, positions he has held since 2009.
Professor Schäkel was awarded his MD at the Medical School in Hannover, Germany. He previously served a Predoctoral Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the State University of New York in the USA. His research interests lie in immune responses in chronic inflammatory diseases, suchas psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and lupus erythematosus, as well as malignantmelanoma.
Professor Schäkel has published widely in many peer-reviewed journals, including Immunity, the Journal of Dermatological Science, the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and the Journal of Experimental Medicine; in addition to articles in the Journal der Deutschen Dermatologischen Gesellschaft.
In 2007, he received the Karl-Hansen Award of the German Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and in 2010, the Champion Novartis Research Prize.
