Manuel Barreiro de Acosta is head of the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) unit at the University Clinical Hospital in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and President of the Spanish Working Group on Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (Grupo Español de Trabajo en Enfermedad de Crohn y Colitis Ulcerosa (GETECCU]).

Dr Barreiro de Acosta studied medicine at the University of Santiago (also in Santiago de Compostela), and completed a PhD at the university’s department of surgery on the influence of genetics in the Galician Crohn´s disease population and the relationship with biologic therapies.

He has acted as Principal Investigator in 35 clinical trials, and as co-investigator in a further 26 clinical trials. He has published extensively in the field of IBD, being recognized as author or co-author of more than 180 peer-reviewed publications in numerous national and international journals. He has contributed close to 70 book chapters in his specialized field and almost 500 communications to congresses and has attended more than 400 ongoing medical education events.

In his role as President of GETECCU, Dr Barreiro de Acosta has played a pivotal role in improving the care of patients with IBD through the establishment of clinical practice guidelines that serve as an aid for healthcare professionals, patients, researchers, and payers. He has also been actively involved in setting national and international benchmarks for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
